Delaware
Teens Show How they Roll
December 12, 2002
WILMINGTON,
DE - Sunday, November 17th, teen skaters attended the
first Teen Skate Summit at the Elsmere Skating Center in Wilmington, DE. The summit
is aimed at promoting awareness of social issues, ranging from politics, health,
education and culture. They were excited about the evening and even more anxious
to roll.
SkateGroove.com
was on location to give them insight on what is going on in the Adult Roller Skating
community. They were shown video footage from various national skate events so
they could see the variety and diverse talent and skills that are displayed by
our adult skaters. They were extremely in awe at what they saw. The objective
was to prepare them for their future in roller skating by exposing them to a new
appreciation for skating.
These young people are the next generation of adult roller skaters. They are a
very talented and creative group of individuals that are already true to the sport.
One particular group of teen skaters, who call themselves the "Hot Boys" and "Hot
Girls" put on a fantastic show. They wanted the adults to know what "they can
do". And they did just that. The signature Delaware/Philly style is what many
of you have seen at the national skate parties. It is where the skaters line up
in an interlocking chain, skating backwards on the very outer edge of the rink.
It is what SkateGroove refers to as the Delaware/Philly Roll. These young people
added a little extra to it by forming a circle with hands interlocked, skating
backwards, while each skater in the circle took to the inside middle to strut
their stuff. Some did the Harlem Shake while others simple freestyled.
This
summit focused as an introduction to SkateGroove.com, who we are and what we do.
Future Teen Skate Summits will cover different themes and topics that the youth
want to address in addition to allocating time for physical fitness and exercise
through rollerskating activity. We look forward to doing more with these young
people in the near future.
