The month of January has already come and gone. We have begun a
brand new skate season in 2008 where many of us have already gone
to at least one national skate jam. Before we get too deep into
the 2008 roll, let’s take a Backwards Skate together through
2007 and note some of the events that happened throughout our journey.
JANUARY
2007
Temica Hunt
of Washington, DC landed a role in a new African American based
film about love and relationships entitled “Is Love Enough”.
At this time, the film is almost completed.
On Saturday, January
20, eight members of JBXperience performed a JB
exhibition during halftime at Cicero Stadium
in Cicero, IL. With over 1500 derby fans in attendance, DeLow,
Tre, DJ, D-Millz, Felicia, Tonya, Doe and Latyra put on
a show in which they received many cheers.
FEBRUARY
2007
On February 12, baby
Hailee Alannah Bovell was born to parents Mr.
and Mrs. Marlon Bovell of
the 62 mm Skate Club at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington,
DC NW. She weighed 5 lbs. 4 oz.
Mr. &
Mrs. Bayron Porras (Marilyn - Silver & Gold, Unlimited)
were wed in a candlelight ceremony at a small church in San Antonio,
TX on Friday, February 16, 2007.
APRIL
2007
Antiono Jamell Moore
was born to parents Antiono Jamell Moore Sr. and
Lay Bolton on April 19, 2007 at 6 lbs. 10 oz.
In Brooklyn, NY the
Empire Roller Disco is no more. After 66 years of service
to the community,
on April 24, 2007 it opened its doors to one last roll for the national
skating community. The Empire will surely be missed but not forgotten.
To preserve your Empire memories, be sure to contact Kappa
Chris to get a copy of the DVD entitled “The Rise
and Fall of an Empire” available through www.myspace.com/kappachrisdvds
or send email to kappachris@comcast.net.
In Jacksonville, FL,
Sebrina Washington and Meneil Huggar aka
"Mello" were wed on April 28, 2007.
MAY
2007
In
May 2007, a Chicago-based production company contacted SkateGroove
Entertainment seeking skaters to perform in a McDonald’s
commercial and was hired for photography, casting and assisting
with choreography. DeWayne Goodlow of Chicago helped
coordinate the effort locally and got the ball rolling. The ending
result was a very nice commercial for McDonald’s Double Quarter
Pounder featuring some fantastic style skating moves. Special thanks
to JBXperience for helping make this happen, Bill
Butler for choreography, Tyrone Dixon
for direction and advice, Mr. J. Buie for his ideas,
Larry, Brian and Alina
from the production crew, Red, Somiko,
Keezo Kane, Bobbi Jo, Chi-Force,
JB Elite, C-Land Freestyle Rollers,
and D-Nice Entertainment for doing a wonderful
job auditioning
and performing. Never before published production stills can be
seen at http://www.skategroove.com/groovecliques/mcdonalds2k7_01.htm.
Two days after filming,
SkateGroove’s very own, Michael Blackwell
walked down the aisle in holy matrimony as he married Monique
Faison on Saturday, May 12 in Columbus, OH.
Later that month,
Larry Taylor of Los Angeles suffered a few injuries
while skating but he was in and out of the hospital in two days
with expectations of a full recovery.
JUNE
2007
The Rink
in Montvale closed June 3 to make way for a housing development.
JULY
2007
Our Family Skate Association’s Tasha Klusmann
began traveling around the country meeting with skaters to hold
recorded interviews giving people the opportunity to candidly tell
their skate stories with StoryCorps on July 1, 2007. Stories were
recorded in NY, Chicago (IL), Cleveland (OH), Indianapolis (IN),
Oakland (CA), Philadephia (PA), and Memphia (TN) in 2007. By the
end of 2007 they had surpassed their initial goal of 50 stories
for a total of 64.
A new outdoor rink
opened in Edison, New Jersey while in Delaware, Elsmere
Skating Rink experienced a fire but it was contained quickly
and no one was injured. The rink was back on its feet in no time
at all.
The Japanese Soul
Skater, Shigeki Oki of Tokyo came
to the states to visit for a few weeks and get his roll on in several
cities including Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Chicago.
Shigeki had a great time during his visit and was well taken care
of by the skate family.
AUGUST 2007
On Saturday, August
11, vocal artist and member of JBXperience Skate Club, Dell
"D-Millz" Miller, walked down the aisle and said
“I Do” to the love of his life and now his wife, Elita
Davis. The couple wed at Maryland Avenue Baptist Church
on the south side of Chicago in front of family and friends.

An unfortunate accident
occurred on Saturday, August 11 when a member of the Naptown
Real Rollers, Lamone Rogers aka “Poetry-N-Motion”,
was ran over by a car while participating in the Black Expo Parade
in Anderson, IN. Poetry’s situation was life threatening and
he sustained several injuries but with God and hundreds of blessings
and prayers from skaters, he is recovering remarkably well and quickly.
The
STL Rollers Skate Club and friends were invited
to perform at half time for the St. Louis Arch Rival Roller
Girls. The crowd was quite engaged in the stunts and tricks
performed and they received much applause.

In Louisville, Alonzo
"Yogi" White, Sr. and LaTasha "Ms.
Shorty" Tolbert of the Louisville Railridaz were united
in holy matrimony on Saturday, August 18, 2007 at Little Flock Missionary
Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky.
SEPTEMBER
2007
This year’s
Sk8-A-Thon featured an appreciation/acknowledgement
of the skaters who participated in the movie Roll Bounce
and Tasha from Our Family Skate Association was on hand collecting
items for the National African American Roller Skating Archives
Project. By the end of 2007 archive had approximately 2738
items.
News from Washington,
DC came with Nikki Bowens announcing the launch
of her Style Skaters Television Network. Look for
more on SSTVN in 2008.
OCTOBER 2007
In October 2007, Cleveland, Ohio said hello to a brand new roller
skating facility, The Multiplex. This recreational
complex is owned by the Word Church and includes a pool hall, basketball
rims, a restaurant, concession area, a workout facility and a roller
skating rink. It was built to provide a safe, fun environment for
families.
Another rink opened
on the west coast but this one had a uniqueness of its own. In Stockton,
CA, former city councilman Ralph Lee White’s
dream for the children came true. He and his wife held a grand opening
for the new skating rink they built as an extension of their residence.
In Naptown, Kevin
Edmonds of the Flint Rollerskating Association
presented Poetry-in-Motion with proceeds from a
collection he spearheaded to assist with medical expenses from his
August accident. Great job Kevin and thanks to all the skaters who
donated and sent words of encouragement.
NOVEMBER
2007
Skater Kurt
Smith was featured on Philly’s NBC 10 in November
for his mastery skills in vegetarian cuisine. Smith grew up skating
at Elsmere Skating Center in Delaware.
DECEMBER
2007
In December 2007, SkateGroove introduced “Prayer Corner”.
This page is available for anyone seeking prayer for themselves
or a fellow skater who might be sick, had a loved one pass, a family
member ordered to Iraq; or for much happier occasions such as graduating
from an academic institution, celebrating a wedding, birth of a
child, monumental birthday and more.
BodyGuard
of JiveBiscuit in the ATL began an Internet
radio broadcast on December 10. It had been a dream of his to have
his own radio station so he merged his dream and his passion for
skating to provide a new avenue of communication for the skating
community.
Catch Sk8 Talk with Bodyguard, Monday-Wednesday,
8:00 p.m. til 10:00 p.m., at freeradiousa.com
or visit JiveBiscuit.com.
Mr. Kip Smith
married “Mrs. Kip” , Tenisha Gordon
on December 16 in St. Louis.
In Michigan, the Detroit
Rhythmic Rollers (DRR) were busy raising money for Breast
Cancer at their to-be-annual “Skate For A Cure”. All
proceeds were donated to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.
DRR’s efforts were featured on Detroit’s Fox 2 news.
